About Us

Welcome to The Fishwrapper!

The staff of The Fishwrapper welcomes you to this exciting paper that has become a favorite of young and old alike. This is a bi-weekly newspaper with the objective of bringing inspirational reading, uplifting articles, and information everyone can use. We hope you will find it refreshing, thought-provoking, and motivating as you face the challenges of everyday life.

Where did we get our name? The Fishwrapper name comes from a practice done long ago. Merchants would wrap fish their clients purchased in old newspapers so they could be easily carried with little mess. The newspaper of course became soaked, smelled of fish, and was probably best discarded. Eventually, people made an association between the worthlessness of the paper and the credibility of a questionable comment or story. They would reply with a bit of sarcasm, “Yeah I saw that in the Fishwrapper”, indicating that it was meaningless and doubtful and perhaps even offensive.

It is our hope that you will find this publication to be of benefit. If you find a little encouragement, an inspiring thought, a little humor, or just some common sense direction by reading this paper, then our purpose has been achieved.

Meet The Editor

In 1999, a little print shop in Strausstown, PA decided to close its doors and Little Mountain Printing was contacted to see if there was interest in some of their equipment. It was there that the owners of Little Mountain Printing became aware of a small publication called the Strausstown Fishwrapper. They were intrigued by the concept, and eventually purchased the rights to it. The Strausstown name was soon removed from the title so it could be distributed on a broader scale under the new name, ‘The Fishwrapper.’  At first, when you’d mention the name, people would look at you like you must be crazy. It took a while, but eventually, The Fishwrapper became a familiar household name. Today, it has a circulation of over 94,000 copies with subscribers in almost all 50 states, as well as Canada.

In 2009, Little Mountain Printing decided to compile some of its best stories into a hardcover book which could be a handy reference for speakers or a conversation piece in the home library. The idea was to build a series of volumes, and so, to date, there are three – with a fourth slated for 2020. The combined sale of the first three volumes has already exceeded 50,000 books!

In 1994, Merle Gingrich became aware that Little Mountain Printing was for sale. It was already approximately five years old at the time. After some careful consideration, he decided it was time to try a venture of his own.

Working as a stock boy for Dutch-Way Farm Markets since the age of 16, Merle worked his way up through the ranks to become the store manager, which later proved to be an invaluable experience.

While the two fields were entirely different, there were many applicable lessons that could be used in making decisions.

The learning curve into the printing world was greater than anticipated; however, and on one noteworthy occasion, he questioned whether he had made the right decision. That particular evening, things were not running well and the product coming off the press did not meet the standard of quality he desired.

He threw his hands up in frustration, shed a few tears, and prayed to God for direction. This was a defining moment for him. Determined to refocus and regroup, he made some changes within the company. From that point on, the operation began to run more smoothly, making his decision to get into the printing business a positive experience.

Little Mountain Printing received its name because it was situated on Little Mountain Road, and the original building in which it resided continued to be leased until 1998. Then, it moved to a new 2,400 sq. ft. shop which was built on Merle’s home property in Richland, PA.

With the acquisition of The Fishwrapper in 1999, it wasn’t long until it became obvious that even more space was needed. In 2009, the current Fishwrapper home (previously occupied by Dutch Valley Foods and Solar Innovations) was purchased and renovated. This facility was considerably larger, covering 35,000 sq. ft., and comfortably allowed for future expansion.

While many folks know Little Mountain Printing as “The Home Of The Fishwrapper,” that is only one segment of the business.

Little Mountain Printing also operates as a commercial printing firm, offering high-quality, full-color printing, as well as digital print capabilities. A team of graphic designers are on staff with the expertise to design everything from catalogs and brochures, to calendars and yearbooks.
